 Re:The Watchtower Idol - 2005/03/04 13:47 I guess the bit that I would add to Phi's comments in respect of this thread is in respect of the work of the Two Witnesses themselves.

Elijah polarised the issue of true and false worship when confronting Israel limping along on two opinions. So too John when he confronted the religious leaders on the deplorable state of true worship. Moses confronted those who had created a golden calf and did not cleave to the side of true worship.

I truly believe that their witnessing work will contain these confrontational elements because of the deplorable state of true worship. While their immediate undoing is the wild beast (Rev 11:7), I question why the wild beast itself would want to kill them. I reason that a political wild beast would not have a direct interest in a bunch of religious nuts. However it's religious prophet in the form of the two horned wild beast would. It is this wild beast that forces people to worship the image.

In Jesus case it was the political beast of that time that actually killed him. However this was done at the behest of the religious leaders.

Interestingly it is the false prophet/two horned wild beast that causes fire to come down out of heaven. Given that the Two Witnesses can issue fire from their mouths, I see this is an allusion to the miracles and counter miracles performed when Moses was before Pharaoh.

No doubt it was the magic practising priests who were stirring Pharoah's resistance and who may have continued to reinforce his notion of divinity. Again there was a polarisation of issues as to who was the true God and whose son would be saved - God's son Israel or Pharoah's supposed divine son.

So my point here is that if the WTS is putting up something as an idol in place of true worship then it would follow that the Two Witnesses (whoever they are), at least will confront them over that.

Just some additional thoughts

Some great thoughts there,IMHO! Very interesting...the comparable confrontations! Hmmm, interesting!!

Something else too...inline with your thought of the false prophet beast inspiring the killing of the two witnesses...

it seems many today feel there has to be an organized group performing the tasks of the two witnesses - i.e. WT anointed - they feel it HAS to be that way for the beast to be able to kill them, he can't kill a scattered number of indiscernable faithful ones, they must all be gathered under the umbrella of one organisation. With this mindset there is another angle to the question you asked epig:

I enjoyed your explaination, and I don't disagree. But part of it is also: Satan knows who belong to God, he knows where the scattered wheat are. And this beast is his as is the false prophet beast. Just because these ones are not part of an organized group does NOT mean they are dis-organised, but they are led by Jah's spirit.

Although I do note the various prior two witnesses, Zerubbabel and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, Moses and Aaron and John and Jesus, were fairly out front there. Nobody could mistake who they were. I just don't see that this must mean they are organised in an organisation as WTS say.

The situation with Zerubbabel and Joshua is interesting. These are the two that are cross referenced at Rev 11:4, the two olive trees and the two lampstands. Here we see another role for the two witnesses. Being trees, providing oil and light. In fact they are called "sons of the oil".

Also, there seems to be a connection between these two and the rebuilding of the temple. As I have said in other posts plus my blogs on the temple, I think this occurs during the same time as the two witnesses witnessing.
