Re:New Joke - 2005/05/27 02:15
Sorry, its a bit lame.
Nope, Warrior, I not only found myself ROTFL, but it's quite true. It reminded me of an incident that happened at my father's funeral (or as the Witnesses say, "memorial talk) a few years ago:
Although my father was a Witness, my mother and siblings aren't. However, out of deference to mine and my dad's beliefs, they allowed me to handle all of the arrangements from within the congregation. One of the elders from my dad's congregation gave the "funeral discourse", and the memorial was held at his Hall.
When the procession pulled up to the Hall (sans a casket, of course--after all, JW's are afraid of having dead folks in the Kingdom Hall), one of the brothers met me at the door. He frantically told me that the programs had a picture of a Bible with a...CROSS on them!!! What a disaster! What should they do?
By this time, my mother (a staunch Baptist) was rapidly becoming peturbed. She wanted to know why the Witnesses were being so intolerant at our family's time of extreme grief. Meanwhile, the procession was completely blocking all the traffic on one of the major thoroughfares in my hometown.
I pulled the brother aside, and convinced him of the following facts:
1) The cross on the programs was an accident--Satan didn't put it on there, the printer did; 2) All of my worldly family was there, and they were getting pretty ticked off at this little tempest in a teapot; 3) As JW's we are supposed to be free from fear of things like crosses; 4) And finally, if any Witnesses were stumbled by the existence of the cross on their programs, they could take said program home and treat it like any good Witness was supposed to treat an idolatrous abomination (Tear it asunder, burn the pieces with fire, and bury the ashes).
Although this happened almost a decade ago, this was one of the first occasions where I started thinking that something wasn't right with my religion.
