Re:Jw Reform From WithIn Or Out? - 2005/07/27 17:03 ablebodiedman,

Thank you for your kind words. I appreciated the scriptures you shared. It can be fun to look in the scriptures for something that would apply today, but we really shouldn't take it too seriously. I hope that is how you see it. Those prophecies were written aforetime for our instruction, but they are prophecies that were made to another people in another time. We have to be careful not to be so self-centered as to think that the Bible revolves around us. That is a mistake that the Watchtower makes.

In regard to the man of lawlessness, I really think that Paul means Caesar. I enjoyed your article, but one weakness that stands out to me is that you seem to be arguing that because anthropos CAN mean more than one person, it therefore DOES mean more than one person. Did I misunderstand you there?

I do agree with you, however, that the spirit of Jesus' mouth is the truth (or the good news).

I believe this belief system you are discribing is called Amillennialism. This is the belief that all Bible prophecies relate to ancient times rather than the futures and that they have all already occured. I read a book not too long ago by a Liberal Luthern who supported this view point.

I consider myself a Progressive Christian. I do not subscribe to Amillennialism, though. The far opposite of Amillennialism on the far right would be like the Southern Baptists and the like that belief nearly everything in the book of Revelations is literal, even the part about the earth being cleaned by fire..and I am positively NOT in agreement with this far right view either.

"We have to be careful not to be so self-centered as to think that the Bible revolves around us. That is a mistake that the Watchtower makes."

Very, VERY true. I also read a book refuting that rapture that was written by a Catholic priest, and sorry to say he said the same thing! That is that he did the same thing with the Catholic Church that the JW org does with themselves, saying that every Bible prophecy cenetered around them.

I believe in a form of millennialism but NOT the the type where only this or that name-brand religious group get saved.

I like this point. Self-centered theology often keeps us from seeing the Truth.

It can be intresting to consider those perspectives, but our spiritual lives should not be resolved through them.

Donbodo,

I obviously believe the opposite to you on this and hope you don't mind if I state my opinion.

I am convinced that people exist who really are annointed and invited to become kings with Christ. These people are presently walking about on this planet.

These annointed ones need to be absolutely convinced that the entire bible does revolve around them. Their lives and future depends on it. Thinking anything else would be a very big mistake which will end up costing them their lives.

I am sure everyone including Don agrees with you here.

You can think all you want. However there have been "anointed" throughout the 2000 years of christianity. Did every single bible prophecy revolve around each and every one of them in all times? We can be sure there have been Christians from each era to argue for such in there own case. In this respect we are no different, and invariably in our case the fullfillment will possibly and equally be not true as well.

To me... trying to prove to others through self-centered theology that you or someone else is "anointed" is a fat waste of time. Let Jehovah say who the anointed are.

Polymotheos,

Will you or anyone else believe it's the truth only if you hear Jehovah himself speaking it?

If this is not your criteria for measuring the truth then what is?
