15 “Therefore, when YOU catch sight of the disgusting thing that causes desolation, as spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in a holy place, (let the reader use discernment,) 16 then let those in Ju·de´a begin fleeing to the mountains.
This is what the ablebodiedman told Gabriel to explain to Daniel:
Daniel 8:17
17 So he came beside where I was standing, but when he came I got terrified so that I fell upon my face. And he proceeded to say to me: “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of [the] end.”
It makes sense then that if we have caught sight of the disgusting thing it is the "time of the end" and this vision should also now begin to be undertood.
Let's start with the following vision found in Daniel Chapter 8:
1 In the third year of the kingship of Bel·shaz´zar the king, there was a vision that appeared to me, even me, Daniel, after the one appearing to me at the start. 2 And I began to see in the vision; and it came about, while I was seeing, that I was in Shu´shan the castle, which is in E´lam the jurisdictional district; and I proceeded to see in the vision, and I myself happened to be by the watercourse of U´lai. 3 When I raised my eyes, then I saw, and, look! a ram standing before the watercourse, and it had two horns. And the two horns were tall, but the one was taller than the other, and the taller was the one that came up afterward. 4 I saw the ram making thrusts to the west and to the north and to the south, and no wild beasts kept standing before it, and there was no one doing any delivering out of its hand. And it did according to its will, and it put on great airs.
5 And I, for my part, kept on considering, and, look! there was a male of the goats coming from the sunset upon the surface of the whole earth, and it was not touching the earth. And as regards the he-goat, there was a conspicuous horn between its eyes. 6 And it kept coming all the way to the ram possessing the two horns, which I had seen standing before the watercourse; and it came running toward it in its powerful rage.
7 And I saw it coming into close touch with the ram, and it began showing bitterness toward it, and it proceeded to strike down the ram and to break its two horns, and there proved to be no power in the ram to stand before it. So it threw it to the earth and trampled it down, and the ram proved to have no deliverer out of its hand.
8 And the male of the goats, for its part, put on great airs to an extreme; but as soon as it became mighty, the great horn was broken, and there proceeded to come up conspicuously four instead of it, toward the four winds of the heavens.
9 And out of one of them there came forth another horn, a small one, and it kept getting very much greater toward the south and toward the sunrising and toward the Decoration. 10 And it kept getting greater all the way to the army of the heavens, so that it caused some of the army and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it went trampling them down. 11 And all the way to the Prince of the army it put on great airs, and from him the constant [feature] was taken away, and the established place of his sanctuary was thrown down. 12 And an army itself was gradually given over, together with the constant [feature], because of transgression; and it kept throwing truth to the earth, and it acted and had success.
13 And I got to hear a certain holy one speaking, and another holy one proceeded to say to the particular one who was speaking: “How long will the vision be of the constant [feature] and of the transgression causing desolation, to make both [the] holy place and [the] army things to trample on?” 14 So he said to me: “Until two thousand three hundred evenings [and] mornings; and [the] holy place will certainly be brought into its right condition.”
So who really does the ram represent?
What historical figure had a great hold over western, northern and southern parts of the world and yet not the eastern parts?
It was when Christianity started to recognise a Papal system.
Although very powerfull there must have been some division within the church as indicated by the two horns.
This division was an eastern and western separation of those who held to Christian beliefs.
Circa 400 CE: The Bishop of Rome began to be recognized as the most senior of all bishops. Siricius (384-399 CE) became the first bishop to be called Pope. 1054 CE: A lengthy power struggle between eastern and western Christianity culminated in a schism between the Eastern Orthodox churches and the Western Rite (later often called the Roman Catholic Church). Many Christian sects broke away from the Western Rite throughout the Middle Ages (Cathars, Knights Templars, etc.). These were generally exterminated by the central church in various genocidal wars.
Catholicism is therefore represented by the taller of the two horns which came up afterward while the Eastern Orthodox is the shorter. Da 8:3
What happened to the Catholic Church?
It's power was overthrown by Protestantism.
1517 CE: Martin Luther attacked certain practices and beliefs of the Church, and the authority of the Pope. He was followed by other reformers which produced a mass movement -- the Protestant Reformation.
The protestant movement is represented in Daniels vision by the "male of the goats" who showed bitterness towards the ram and trampled it down.
Although very successful Protestantism eventually became divided as represented by the four horns on the male goat which replaced the one great horn.
Does history show that Protestantism essentially divided into four separate groups?
Yes.
the Protestant Reformation began out of which four major divisions or traditions of Protestantism would immerge: Lutheran, Reformed, Anabaptist and Anglican. During this time God raised up godly men in different countries in order to once again restore churches throughout the world to their biblical roots and to biblical doctrines and practices.
The above quote is taken from the following web page:
What did the four horns of the male of the goat represent?
Lutheran Reformed Anabaptist Anglican
So who is represented by the sudden growth of "another horn, a small one"?
The small horn represents the growth of the Bible Students Association started by Charles Taze Russell who is quoted in the following:
"Seemingly by accident, one evening I dropped into a dusty, dingy hall, where I had heard religious services were held, to see if the handful who met there had anything more sensible to offer than the creeds of the great churches. There, for the first time, I heard something of the views of Second Adventists [Advent Christian Church], the preacher being Mr. Jonas Wendell . . . Thus, I confess indebtedness to Adventists as well as to other denominations. Though his Scripture exposition was not entirely clear, . . . it was sufficient, under God, to re-establish my wavering faith in the divine inspiration of the Bible, and to show that the records of the apostles and prophets are indissolubly linked. What I heard sent me to my Bible to study with more zeal and care than ever before, and I shall ever thank the Lord for that leading; for though Adventism helped me to no single truth, it did help me greatly in the unlearning of errors, and thus prepared me for the Truth."
Charles Taze Russell
This very small religion started to grow and from scripture it can be deduced that it actually had the real truth.
Why?
Daniel 8: 9-10
It grew toward the sunrising and toward the Decoration. And it kept getting greater toward the army of the heavens"
Who is this army of the heavens?
Revelation 19:4
14 Also, the armies that were in heaven were following him on white horses, and they were clothed in white, clean, fine linen.
It is those annointed who receive an invitation for an opportunity to rule with Jesus Christ over the earth.
The small horn grew into an organization where the individuals are called Jehovah's Witnesses.
Some of these invited and annointed ones loose their opportunity to rule over the earth because they are misled and stumbled by the small horn which grew.
Daniel 8:10
it caused some of the army and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it went trampling them down.
The evil slave are successful in misleading some and causing them to believe the lie and to operate in error. This disgusting turn of events is the cause of an entity within the small horn which grew called the "man of lawlessness".
To more properly understand this please read the article "The Man of Lawlessness Revealed" found on this same web site at the following link:
Verse 11 of Daniel Chapter 8 reveals that even towards the Prince of the army (Jesus) this small horn put on airs.
Daniel 8:11
11 And all the way to the Prince of the army it put on great airs, and from him the constant [feature] was taken away, and the established place of his sanctuary was thrown down.
How could the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses put on airs against Jesus Christ himself?
Please read the following post on this forum to understand how they have attempted to lift themselves up above the station of Jesus Christ the prince of the army of heaven:
The constant feature which represents true worship is taken away from Jehovah's Witnesses. This means they were in fact blessed with the opportunity of true worship and were also able to approach and enter the sanctuary or temple.
The following scripture in Daniel holds many similarities to that in 2 Thessalonians and so I will paste them together in the following for comparison:
Daniel 8:12
And an army itself was gradually given over, together with the constant [feature], because of transgression; and it kept throwing truth to the earth, and it acted and had success.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
9 But the lawless one’s presence is according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying signs and portents 10 and with every unrighteous deception for those who are perishing, as a retribution because they did not accept the love of the truth that they might be saved. 11 So that is why God lets an operation of error go to them, that they may get to believing the lie, 12 in order that they all may be judged because they did not believe the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness.
The "army itself which is gradually given over" Da 8:12 likely consists of those same ones who are "perishing as a retribution because they did not accept the love of the truth" 2 Th and "kept throwing truth to the earth "Da 8:12.
It seems God could have put an immediate stop to the "transgressions"Da 8:12 however in 2 Thesalonians 2:11 it is explained that he lets the "operation of error continue for a time" so they may all be judged. The army is therefore allowed to properly manifest its transgression gradually in order that no question can be raised concerning it's final judgement and so "the army itself is gradually given over" Da 8:12 by letting the "operation of error" continue.
The small horn which kept getting greater is therefore the earthly organization which eventually becomes the full blown "man of lawlessness".
So how can it be said that the small horn "acted and had success" Da 8:12?
The world rulers of darkness who infiltrate this organization accomplish their goal of stumbling, misleading and ruining many annointed and their followers "the army". It is sucessfully acheived "according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work" 2Th 2:9
This should become even more evident after examining Gabriels explanation in the second half of Daniel Chapter 8.
In the mean time it should be of interest to examine how "the army is gradually given over".
If something is "gradually given over" then a period of time is implied.
There should now exist an obligation to provide not just the time period yet, also the graduated method by which the army is to be given over.
These are answered in both this scripture and expanded in parallel scriptures.
The obligation is recognised by another angel which is properly manifested by his righteous question as follows:
Daniel 8:13
“How long will the vision be of the constant [feature] and of the transgression causing desolation, to make both [the] holy place and [the] army things to trample on?”
The question itself reveals further truths.
The removal of the constant feature has already been discussed however, here the angel mentions the transgression which causes desolation.
Hopefully the reader will already be familiar enough with scripture to see the parallel with same transgression mentioned by Matthew in Chapter 24.
Matthew 24:15
15 “Therefore, when YOU catch sight of the disgusting thing that causes desolation, as spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in a holy place, (let the reader use discernment,)
The transgression is the same one identified in the following post:
The fact that we have recently caught sight of the disgusting thing is the very reason why these scriptures should now make sense.
The angel next provides the time period for the gradual giving over of the army:
Daniel 8:14
14 So he said to me: “Until two thousand three hundred evenings [and] mornings; and [the] holy place will certainly be brought into its right condition.”
2,300 evenings and mornings.
Something is going to gradually occur to this army every morning and evening until 2,300 evenings and mornings are used up.
Does this Chapter explain what that is?
Not directly however, please consider what the army will do during these 2,300 evenings and mornings in this scripture printed in the following once again:
Daniel 8:12
12 And an army itself was gradually given over, together with the constant [feature], because of transgression; and it kept throwing truth to the earth, and it acted and had success.
The army "kept throwing truth to the earth".
The army was told truths every evening and every morning for 2,300 evenings and mornings and yet, they kept throwing these truths to the earth.
Jehovah is indeed a very loving God to continually tell truths to his army of holy ones especially when they have been so thoroughly deceived by demonic creatures.
In fact if it is to occur for 2,300 mornings and evening it should gradually compound into a flood of truths.
Are there parallel scriptures?
Yes.
Isaiah 28
18 And YOUR covenant with Death will certainly be dissolved, and that vision of YOURS with She´ol will not stand. The overflowing flash flood, when it passes through—YOU must also become for it a trampling place. 19 As often as it passes through, it will take YOU men away, because morning by morning it will pass through, during the day and during the night; and it must become nothing but a reason for quaking to make [others] understand what has been heard.”
To understand more about how Isaiah Chapter 28 relates to the man of lawlessness in the end times please carefully read the article "The man of lawlessness revealed" on this web site:
The army will throw these truths to the earth however, there will be some who will understand.
Who will these be?
Once again Daniel answers but this time in his final chapter:
Daniel 12:9
9 And he went on to say: “Go, Daniel, because the words are made secret and sealed up until the time of [the] end. 10 Many will cleanse themselves and whiten themselves and will be refined. And the wicked ones will certainly act wickedly, and no wicked ones at all will understand; but the ones having insight will understand.
The ones who understand will have been carefully attentive during each of these 2,300 mornings and evenings and I expect that it will be these who become part of the bride during the marriage of the lamb and also the invited ones.
As you might imagine someone who started to understand these things during the later period would have great difficulty catching up and so the illustration of the virgins with their lamps becomes more understandable.
In this way the man of lawlessness and those who venerate him are individually overtaken and "done away with" simply because they "keep throwing truths to the earth".
This is now exactly how Paul explained the man of lawlessness would meet his end:
2 Thessalonians 2:8
8 Then, indeed, the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will do away with by the spirit of his mouth and bring to nothing by the manifestation of his presence.
The spirit of Jesus Christs mouth is simply the truth:
John 16:13-14
13 However, when that one arrives, the spirit of the truth, he will guide YOU into all the truth, for he will not speak of his own impulse, but what things he hears he will speak, and he will declare to YOU the things coming. 14 That one will glorify me, because he will receive from what is mine and will declare it to YOU.
Isn't it beautifull how the scriptures are now starting to come together in a wonderfully satisfying way?
The angel Gabriel explained that the "king fierce in countenance" would stand up against Jesus himself and yet be "broken without hand".
No physical battle will take place, what causes the ruin of this king in the time of the end is simply the truth:
Daniel 8:25
And against the Prince of princes he will stand up, but it will be without hand that he will be broken.
Through the prophet Isaiah Jehovah explains the situation of his people during the time of the end. This situation is due to the unwillingness of those ruling his people to accept and deliver truths and knowledge to them. Please read the following excerp from Isaiah Chapter 28 and discern how Jehovah plans to give truths to them a little at a time "in order that they may go and certainly stumble backwards and actually be broken and ensnared and caught."
Notice also how the word "broken" appears in both Daniel and Isaiah.
Isaiah 28:8-14
8 For the tables themselves have all become full of filthy vomit—there is no place [without it]. 9 Whom will one instruct in knowledge, and whom will one make understand what has been heard? Those who have been weaned from the milk, those moved away from the breasts? 10 For it is “command upon command, command upon command, measuring line upon measuring line, measuring line upon measuring line, here a little, there a little.” 11 For by those stammering with their lips and by a different tongue he will speak to this people, 12 those to whom he has said: “This is the resting-place. GIVE rest to the weary one. And this is the place of ease,” but who were not willing to hear. 13 And to them the word of Jehovah will certainly become “command upon command, command upon command, measuring line upon measuring line, measuring line upon measuring line, here a little, there a little,” in order that they may go and certainly stumble backwards and actually be broken and ensnared and caught. 14 Therefore hear the word of Jehovah, YOU braggarts, YOU rulers of this people who are in Jerusalem:
There are scriptures using the word "broken" and similar words in many other places which deal with the demise of the evil slave. Please see the following scriptures and understand their context:
KJV--Matthew 24:51--He will cut him to pieces NWT--Daiel 8:25------he will be broken. NWT--Daniel 12:7-----dashing of the power of the holy people to pieces. NWT-- Isaiah 28:13---stumble backwards and actually be broken NWT--Isaiah 30:13----like a broken section about to fall NWT--Isaiah 30:14----crushed to pieces without one’s sparing
The gradual truths which eventually become a flood will come from a much different source than expected. It will come from someone who has no extensive background in academics as well as scripture. Someone unlearned.
Isaiah 28:11
"11 For by those stammering with their lips and by a different tongue he will speak to this people"
Isn't it wonderfull how so many scriptures are now starting to make sense.
If you have been following this please now consider how very much information and knowledge is required to comprehend what I have written so far. In this way those who have been negligent in their duties to provide food at the proper time will be overtaken with very little possibility of ever catching up.
They will be flooded out and their power will be broken.
In fact in this post I have put many links to previous material which should help those who are just now realizing truths to catch up however, this makes for some very tiresome reading and slows down everybody else who might be paying attention.
Eventually I expect that progress will have to continue in such a way that it must be assumed that supporting evidences and knowledge is already understood.
Otherwise it would be like continually plowing a field without progressing forward to sow the seed.
Eventually we have to stop plowing and sow seed.
That is why it is important to pay attention to the gradual truths:
Isaiah 28:23
23 Give ear, YOU men, and listen to my voice; pay attention and listen to my saying. 24 Is it all day long that the plower plows in order to sow seed, that he loosens and harrows his ground? 25 Does he not, when he has smoothed out its surface, then scatter black cumin and sprinkle the cumin, and must he not put in wheat, millet, and barley in the appointed place, and spelt as his boundary?
The 8th Chapter further mentions that after these gradual truths are understood and acted on true worship will be restored:
Daniel 8:14
14 So he said to me: “Until two thousand three hundred evenings [and] mornings; and [the] holy place will certainly be brought into its right condition.”
The desolated place and the constant feature will be resored by truths.
The actual temple which will consist of the annointed will indeed be rebuilt.
Ezekeil Chapter 47 also explains how this works to a blessing for the righteous using water to represent the graduated truths:
Ezekeil 47
1 And gradually he brought me back to the entrance of the House, and, look! there was water going forth from under the threshold of the House eastward, for the front of the House was east. And the water was going down from under, from the right-hand side of the House, south of the altar.
2 And he gradually brought me forth by the way of the north gate and took me around by the way outside to the outer gate that is facing toward the east, and, look! water was trickling from the right-hand side.
3 When the man went forth eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he also proceeded to measure a thousand in cubits and to make me pass through the water, water [up] to the ankles.
4 And he continued measuring a thousand and then made me pass through the water, water [up] to the knees.
And he continued measuring a thousand and now made me pass through—water [up] to the hips.
5 And he continued measuring a thousand. It was a torrent that I was not able to pass through, for the water had got high, water [permitting] swimming, a torrent that could not be passed through.
6 At that he said to me: “Have you seen [this], O son of man?”
The gradual increase in water eventually becomes "a torrent that could not be passed through". Although the truths are gradually explained over a long time they eventually build into a flood or "torrent that could not be passed through."
Those who do pass through this torrent or flood are those who will eventually receive an wonderfull blessing. This is what Jehovah says after explaining the water to Ezekiel:
Ezekiel 47:7
13 This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah has said: “This is the territory that YOU will assign to yourselves for inheritance as the land for the twelve tribes of Israel, with two pieces of field to Joseph.
The fact that Joseph is mentioned in this scripture encourages me to pay more attention to those old testament scriptures. In the near future I expect some profound end time truths will be gradually revealed in regards to this.
Notice how the word "gradually" is conspiciously used in the 47th Chapter of Ezekiel. The restoration of true worship will be gradual and yet, at the same time it will also take many by surprise.
The difference between those knowing what to do and those taken by surprise is knowledge.
Please consider Isaiah Chapter 28 again in verse 21:
Isaiah 28:21
21 For Jehovah will rise up just as at Mount Pe·ra´zim, he will be agitated just as in the low plain near Gib´e·on, that he may do his deed—his deed is strange—and that he may work his work—his work is unusual. 22 And now do not show yourselves scoffers, in order that YOUR bands may not grow strong, for there is an extermination, even something decided upon, that I have heard of from the Sovereign Lord, Jehovah of armies, for all the land.
Both King David and Gibeon knew exactly what to do in order to obtain victory.
This knowledge and also divine intervention was given to them by Jehovah immediately at their time of needing it.
This time however the knowledge is very stange and unusal.
Why?
The answer lies in other translations of the bible as follows:
Isaiah 28:21-22 - New Living Translation
21The LORD will come suddenly and in anger, as he did against the Philistines at Mount Perazim and against the Amorites at Gibeon. He will come to do a strange, unusual thing: He will destroy his own people! 22So scoff no more, or your punishment will be even greater. For the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has plainly told me that he is determined to crush you.
This time he is determined to exterminate his own people.
Does that terrify you?
It should.
Please take comfort however, from what I have posted here and also what this same New Living Translation says at verse 26.
Isaiah 28:26 - New Living Translation
26The farmer knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding.
Much of the rest of Daniel Chapter 8 has already been discussed with Polemotheos in the remaining posts in this thread.
So.
This post is now finished.............. I think.
Best Regards

Re:Daniel should now make sense - 2005/09/25 08:16That is the most intresting interpretation I have ever seen of Daniel 8.
It was speaking of world powers but you switched it to religions who claim the God of the Bible.
The bible clearly says the beasts mean world powers. However it never suggests it means these religions.

Do you suggest it means both world powers and religions who claim the God of the Bible?
Polemotheos,
In the vision of Chapter 8 Gabriel does not say it is world powers, instead he mentions that the ram and goat represent kings of the earth. I do not believe these are human kings but are spiritual kings who have rulership of the earth and effect its human kingdoms and organizations including the very much important and extremely powerful religious ones.
A verse in chapter 10 of Daniel supports this as follows:
Daniel 10:13
13 But the prince of the royal realm of Persia was standing in opposition to me for twenty-one days, and, look! Mi´cha·el, one of the foremost princes, came to help me; and I, for my part, remained there beside the kings of Persia.
As you can see the princes and kings being referred to by the angel conversing with Daniel are also angelic (demonic). These are being referred to as princes and kings because they are the ones who are actually ruling the world even at the present time. The demonic kings and princes are the ones responsible for effecting much of what we see happening in the world through different so called human organizations.
What we see with our literal eyes are human organizations however, what we are really up against is described by the Apostle Paul:
Ephesians 6:10
10 Finally, go on acquiring power in [the] Lord and in the mightiness of his strength. 11 Put on the complete suit of armor from God that YOU may be able to stand firm against the machinations of the Devil; 12 because we have a wrestling, not against blood and flesh, but against the governments, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places
The most disgusting and insidious of all these very powerfull organizations is the one which actually misleads "the holy ones".
How do the princes and kings, the rulers of the darkness acheive this?
Jesus himself explained how they would do this :
Matthew 14:37
37 In response he said: “The sower of the fine seed is the Son of man; 38 the field is the world; as for the fine seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; but the weeds are the sons of the wicked one, 39 and the enemy that sowed them is the Devil.
With what I have explained above the kings and princes are indeed world powers however, the ram, he goat and all the seperate horns represent earthly manifestations of their spiritual power.
I still have not completed the post above and am now thinking that perhaps I should have blogged however, if I hade done that I might not get the very important questions and discussion such as you have initiated here.
This is all a little further along in Daniel Chapter 8 however, I am glad someone is interested enough to ask questions.
It seems I may also be up against these same forces in my efforts to complete my writing otherwise it should have been finished by now.

Re:Daniel should now make sense - 2005/09/25 16:37(Daniel 8:20-21) "The ram that you saw possessing the two horns [stands for] the kings of Me´di·a and Persia. And the hairy he-goat [stands for] the king of Greece; and as for the great horn that was between its eyes, it [stands for] the first king."
Tell me how do you explain away chapter 8's own explanation of who the beasts are?

Do you denign the Bible's context explaination for your own or do you believe both are true?
Polemotheos,
What is being represented by different animals and their horns are the earthly manifestations of what is really happening in the spirit world.
I am going to answer your question with a question.
Amoungst those wicked spirits who are ruling in the darkness who is the first king?
Also count the number of kings:
Kings of Media and Persia = Two horns = 2 Kings
+
King of Greece = Hairy he goat = 1 King
+
Great Horn between goats eyes = first king = 1 King
+
Four kingdoms stand up from he goat = 4 Kings
+
King fierce in countenance = 1 King
The King fierce in countenance is the one which wars with the Prince of Princes and so it can be presumed that he is the last.
Total number of Kings = 9
I have not seen anyone relate these 9 kings to just some of all the many human rulerships that have ever existed with satisfying credibility.
Do you really think that some human king or ruler is actually going to fight against Jesus?
I guess that's two questions.
Notice also in verse 23 it uses kingdom in the singular.
I suspect it is referring to all those kings as really belonging to just one kingdom.
Satan's
Daniel 8:23
23 “And in the final part of their kingdom, as the transgressors act to a completion, there will stand up a king fierce in countenance and understanding ambiguous sayings.

Re:Daniel should now make sense - 2005/09/26 15:46Polemotheos,
I wrote a little more on the first post in this thread.
Hopefully it will make how I have answered your questions a little more understandable.
There is much more to write however, knowing how to write it is helped a great deal by questions like yours.
