Re:The Sign - 2006/07/02 10:14 Here is a Hebrew glimpse of the sign in Amos Chapter 8 however, before that a verse nearer the begining of the chapter explains the motive:

Amos 8:2

Then the LORD said to me, "The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. 3 "In that day," declares the Sovereign LORD, "the songs in the temple will turn to wailing. Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!"

Later verses indicate there is hope that some righteous will remain, the "Pride of Jacob".

Amos 8:7

7 The LORD has sworn by the Pride of Jacob: "I will never forget anything they have done.

8 "Will not the land tremble for this,
and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
it will be stirred up and then sink
like the river of Egypt.

Notice what Psalm 47:4 has to say about the "Pride of Jacob":

Psalm 47:4-7

4 He chose our inheritance for us,
the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.
Selah
5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
sing to him a psalm [a] of praise.

Notice the praises in the Psalm above have everything to do with the start of THE KINGDOM.

So where in Amos does it mention THE SIGN?

Amos 9

9 "In that day," declares the Sovereign LORD,
"I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your religious feasts into mourning
and all your singing into weeping.
I will make all of you wear sackcloth
and shave your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son
and the end of it like a bitter day.

The same sign mentioned by Jesus Christ himself in Matthew:

Matthew 24

29"Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[c]

30"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

Who does Jesus gather from the earth?

The elect, the faithful slave, the Pride (sons) of Jacob.

Regards
