A China scenario - 2005/02/26 13:45 I have been watching with interest China's political situation on Taiwan, Japan and to an extent South Korea. These all involve US relations and support from Europe.

The Europeans are set to lift their arms embargo on China. This has been a great cause of concern to the US who along with Japan and South Korea have been working to shore up Taiwan's position.

Japan has made moves to shift out of its military constraints imposed since WWII. This in turn would position it as a US backed bulwark to any anti-Taiwan aggression. However it is in the process.

China has built up its military presence opposite Taiwan and is particularly vocal in any support moral or otherwise given by anyone towards Taiwan's independance. It has recently made its position very clear to the joint US/Japan arrangements where Japan was prepared to come out and say that Taiwan was a "joint security concern". One suspects that the Sino-Japanese conflict in WWII is still in the collective consciousness.

It might not be surprising then to see China launching a pre-emptive assault on Taiwan. They might even look to humble both Japan and South Korea in the process. This would be necessary to defuse the US capabilities for either protection or retaliation over Taiwan.

Also, in terms of timing, it would seem that a scenarion like this might occur sooner rather than later, if at all. The US would certainly be spread thin entering into another theatre of operations while still dealing with Iraq and funding its initiative there. Economically, China is able to exert powerful influence in Europe and elsewhere. The US itself would have to consider the economic impact of both the additional theatre of war and the trade restrictions that would follow. Any such restrictions would only be an economic boom for Europe. The Chinese would end up buying European rather than US.

The bigger picture which I suspect might be supported by Europe, Russia, North Korea and the Muslim world, would be the redressing and rebalancing of the current US "foreign policy". This article appearing in the Economist gives some interesting insights into the current state of play.

Just to make it clear, I am not suggesting any of this on the basis of any particular political ideology. I see a connection in this to the bible prophecies in Daniel in particular Dan 7:5. However, I am still working on this.

Look forward to any other comments.
