Yeah right on Dodger - love is the root of salvation.
And thank you very much Aaron and Phi for really bringing those points out for us.
Aaron, I especially relate to the notion of the scriptures bearing witness and life not emanating from them per se. I know Phi and some of the others in our group have wobbled on about this too. (ok not wobbled, articulated )
In my JW life I used to think it was about accurate knowledge, depth of knowledge that would prompt a person to engage in a relationship with God. I now believe it is even deeper than that - in fact I often wonder if "knowing" is the problem because that partial knowledge can sometimes get in the way. On the other hand I see that coming to that One, will give all the knowledge that is required.
Thank you all for these thoughts
Much power love and spirit

Re:LOVE - 2005/03/17 15:17Greetings epig,
May you have the GREATEST of peace.
It is true in the JW life that we were taught that it was all about acquiring accurate knowledge and having the 'correct information,' and erroneously so. The truth is, as our Lord Jesus Christ pointed out,
"This is everlasting life, their knowing you, the only God, and the One whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ." (John 17:3)
Everlasting life comes from our knowing him.. personally, intimately. We can not "come to know" him by reading ABOUT him. For by reading about him we can only come to know ABOUT him from what we read. If we desire to come to know him, we must actually come to his Son. For he says,
"No one can come to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
If we desire to come to know the Father, we must come to know the Son and come to be 'known' by him. Then, by means of his spirit that he pours out upon us.. through him we can come to 'know' him and if he so wills, he will reveal his Father to us (Matthew 11:27). His spirit that remains in us will continue to 'speak' to us and reveal to us all the things of the Father, for all things from the Father come FROM Christ. Therefore, by coming to know him personally.. we can know the Father also. And by means of this.. we can have everlasting life.

Yes, it is so annoying isn't it?
Again with the phrase, "spirit and truth". This 'truth' has been explained by the WT as 'accurate knowledge' - another erroneous conclusion. I have come to understand 'truth' in this context as, 'honesty', that is UN-HYPOCRITICAL.
Interestingly, the primary fruit of 'spirit' is LOVE.
The father is looking for ones who worship with unhypocritical love (spirit and truth).
Peter used similar language in 1 Peter 1:22.
Love and Peace

Yes, absolutely!! We need to come to be known by him. Jesus is the way for us to do just that. As I said before, accurate knowledge is ok because it helps us get the right understanding about things and can motivate us accordingly. But such knowledge can puff us up and be cause for stumbling.
That is why I really like the scripture from 1 Cor 8:1-3 especially verse 3
But if anyone loves God, this one is known by him
If we love God, his son is surely going to reveal him to us.
Much love and spirit
