I have wondered if the 'world' that we should not seek friendship with is specifically the Jewish system.

When Jesus said, "My kingdom is no part of this world" was he not refferring to the Jewish 'world'? Because it was THIS world they 'accused' him of trying to be king of. Pilate said, "are you king of the Jews?" not "are you king of the world".

So, applying this as a principle, we would not seek friendship with the religio-political entities of the earth (especially ones that claim to be God's only people) - the kingdom we seek is not part of that world.

You may be right. We just have to figure out if, when a scripture says that the Devil controls the system, whether it means a specific system or all the systems and if it means always or just at a given time.

Thanks for the insights. Yes, we have to beware the spirit of this world, for sure.

It is interesting that Rev. 16:14 says that the demonic inspired expressions GO FORTH TO the kingdoms of the earth to persuade them. Kinda sounds like the demons are an outside influence, rather than an inside one. I also should think this is referring to one specific event, rather than an ongoing (for centuries) process.

Regarding the definite article on "the wicked one," we should keep in mind that it can still be used generically. Proverbs always talks about "THE righteous one," but I don't think it means one specific person.

Further, if the governments are so deeply under Satans control, how can they also be called "the arrangement of God" who have their authority "by God". How can it be said that they are "placed in their relative positions by God", and even be called "God's minister" and "God's public servants"? (Ro 13:1-7) It's not quite as cut and dried as we might imagine IMHO.

Only one problem with your resoning. When John wrote those words (98CE) the jewish world was all but dead.
