Re:Blood: Altogether Taboo or Dietary Restriction? - 2005/03/20 08:43
Hi all.
I have always felt that the issues of the health benefits or otherwise of using blood are irrelevant in a Biblical debate and only serve to cloud the real issue somewhat. That has been one of the most frustrating things for me about following blood threads on other boards - the endless distracting side issues. This is a spiritual issue. Surely, the question for Christians attempting to follow the Scriptures is: Does the Bible outlaw blood transfusions?
The answer to that question is: NO. The Bible does not refer to blood transfusions at all.
So the next question would be: Does the Bible infer that blood transfusions are wrong for Christians?
Well before we move on to that question we must acknowledge that we are here examining inference. That is, we are using our judgement, human reasoning, to arrive at a conclusion based on Scriptures which do not directly speak of the issue we are examining. We are not dealing with 'facts' anymore, but with interpretation. That means that we have moved into the arena of "conscience matters". We are each responsible for obeying God as we understand his will to be. No one else has been appointed as the "master" of our faith, especially not in life or death matters. That is why I feel the Society made a backwards step and a serious spiritual error when they took it upon themselves to remove the freedom of choice from JW's regarding blood transfusions. I also feel that it is a 'sin' to judge others regarding their choice over this matter.
But that still leaves us each personally with the question: Does the Bible infer that blood transfusions are wrong for Christians?
That is where it gets interesting IMHO.
Much Philia.
